Over the years I've watched and read so many things.
When I first started writing, I was heavily inspired by the works of Rick Riordan. Particularly Percy Jackson and it's sequel series, Heroes of Olympus.
That was my first huge bit of inspiration, which caused me to write fan fiction of PJO. I heavily regret it but I have fond memories.
Lord of the rings was inspiring in that old grandpa's stories type of way. I resonate with Brandon Sanderson when he calls Tolkien "Grandpa Tolkien."
He was the grandfather of modern fantasy.
I have always enjoyed the books and movies of the Hunger Games. These didn't directly inspire any stories as of yet, but rather the shattering of the Union in the Aeternum. Another thing is actual histories of the War of Northern Agression. It is part of my heritage.
The Roman Empire is one of a couple things (Contact me for the other real world one) that really have inspired the planet of Oran, in the Aeternum. The idea of a dictatorial state not being a bad thing is something I'd like to toy with. Nobody touches democracy. Every story seems to be someone overthrowing a dictator, and it is BORING. Red Rising inspired the use of the Latin in it, as well as the upper society. The body modification is really neat. That, as well as the Steel Inquisitors of Mistborn really inspired the royal guard, as well as the modifications done to Letum.
Mistborn has been a huge inspiration in Before We Rot. The powers of the universe were largely modeled after the Allomantic powers of that book series. Hemalurgy, one of the other three power sets, very much inspired the wraith blades of BWR.
The way the cosmere worlds work, in and of itself, inspired alot of the Aeternum. The world Hoppers especially. I changed that idea significantly when I came up with the Umbrir. I modeled those after fallen angels and biblically accurate angels.
Obviously The Walking Dead bas inspired the zombie apocalypse of Vireth in BWR, but another one is the Dead series by T.W. Brown.
Terradine was inspired largely by the planet in the Stormlight Archive series. Aethere was inspired by the Chasms on the same planet, and partially the jungle in Avatar, but to a much lesser degree.
Kria, which I havent written a story about, is partially inspired by the colonials leaving Europe for the new world. Also inspired by uncontacted people groups.
The planet of Xav is inspired by several things. One is the Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Also Hollow Earth theory in general. Also inception. The way the environment is bent at one point, having people walking above you is really neat. I figured it'd work best in 3 layers.
There are also some things I still have yet to write.
A hunger games type overthrow or collapse of a government. If I ever write about the Shattering of the Union on Vireth, this will inspire it.
A serial killer story. Perhaps Corinne and Arden from BWR, before the fall. Dexter inspired those two, but it'd inspire the story much more heavily.
A spy/investigation story. Bourne, and Reacher would inspire that one.
Let me know what inspires you!
