My thoughts on AI

Ai, freely and widely available to the public has been a thing for just under 4 years now. Voice cloning, Large language models, and image software. It has all come a long way, and improved in many ways, so here are my thoughts.

On LLMs

Large langauge models are a wonderful tool for research and even quick answers. Things like debugging I used to take to help servers in discord, and even places like reddit. Now I can get helpful information with LLMs such as Claude.

It is a personal belief they should not have guardrails, but most do, and that's fine if a company decides to keep it that way.

In addition to using them for research, some people use them even to come up with ideas, which is fine to me personally, it can be like a springboard for ideas. Like chatting with friends, family or coworkers, obviously it isn't as good as real humans, but its always there.

On image software

This stuff has improved non stop since the original releases. The main issues I face are the constant warnings over prompts not being fit for TOS. the guard rails are so tough with image generation.

Now they are very useful for simple things, like representing a character that's in your head.

On audio

This one is iffy to me. Just the regular text to voice is fine, but I have a strong distaste for copying human voices. It feels wrong. And also it is a good tool for scams and the like. As with all these, I am still against regulation on it. But I can still be concerned.

Where I take issue

I already said with the audio one, I don't like cloning people's voices. You end up with actors who die and they make clones of the voice and continue to profit, same with music artists. I think people who put in real work are where the money should go.

Similar with images and text. Ideas and representations are one thing, it is quite another to go sell AI BS. Use real people, write with your own brain, do not use ai if you're gonna produce something for other people. Analysis is it's own thing, much like research, as long as you watch it and vet the info, it's free game.

AI isn't good with privacy

They sell data, harvest what is being sent to them, or they scrape the internet. I hate that fact. I'm tired of OS's being filled with AI, and a recent example is Microsoft boasting that most of their code is made with AI, while having updates brick systems or kill hardware. It's stupid.

All that said

I didn't use AI in the making of this post. No ideas, or concepts, and no writing help. I am tired of seeing "Made with AI."

I’m one of the people who certainly dislike (to word it nicely) AI image generation, and it always annoys me when I’m looking for inspiration on Pinterest and find a picture that would otherwise be great, but had a little “modified with AI” tag in the corner. And upon looking at the pin more closely, I find all sorts of random objects that don’t mean anything and clear signs of AI not understanding what’s going on. We really need some system to sort the AI from the real when it comes to art.
